Perfect waves set for Billabong Pro final
Three Australians remain in the Billabong Pro as it enters its final day with perfect three metre surf running onto the reef break of Teahupoo, Tahiti.
In conditions described as the best ever for a final here, West Australian Taj Burrow meets Hawaiian Shane Dorian in their quarter-final clash, while the Gold Coast's Beau Emerton takes on Byron Bay's Kieren Perrow.
World No.4 Burrow defeated Sydney's Nathan Hedge in the fourth round on Thursday, while Emerton - here as a replacement for injured Hawaiian surfer Sunny Garcia - surfed brilliantly to oust Wollongong's Mick Lowe.
In other quarter-finals Hawaiian Kalani Robb has Brazilian giant-killer Danilo Costa, while six time world champion Kelly Slater has former winner here Cory Lopez.
"Kelly's going to be a hard heat but hopefully the waves will come to me," said Lopez, who defeated world champion Andy Irons.
Slater has an injured foot and is surfing under the influence of novocaine injections but, after defeating world No.3 Luke Egan, knows he can still perform.
"I got another heat or two to go and I now know I can push it a little bit," Slater said.
Egan fell off a rescue jetski onto dry reef gashing his nose.
"I m fine, it's only a scratch, it looks way worse than it is," Egan said.
