Carlton does it again to the Bombers
Carlton has once again produced a stunning upset over arch-rival Essendon, winning their AFL match at the MCG by 11 points.
Adding to the drama of an exhilarating last term, the light tower at the construction end blacked out 17 minutes into the quarter as driving rain lashed the ground.
But the game continued and Carlton posted its first win under new coach Denis Pagan, 15.15 (105) to 13.16 (94).
The Blues have shown a habit in the last few years of producing their best against Essendon, particularly when the Bombers are the strong favourites.
Earlier this week, Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said his club was still "filthy" for the 1999 preliminary final, when the Blues scored one of their most famous wins by a point.
Friday night was another Blues-Bombers epic, with the favourite for its second straight wooden spoon showing outstanding spirit against the unbackable favourite.
Key forward Lance Whitnall, who kicked 1.5 in the first half, kicked his third goal from a 50m shot early in the last term to give his side the lead.
Five minutes later, in-form forward Brendan Fevola cleverly soccered the ball to Ryan Houlihan, who kicked a beautiful goal on the run.
Adrian Hickmott's second goal for the quarter a few minutes later sealed the match.
Fevola, who kicked four goals, and utility Anthony Koutoufides were best for the Blues while Dean Rioli had another strong game for the Bombers.
