NSW sinks Sharks in try feast
New South Wales was a convincing 49-36 winner over Coastal Sharks of South Africa in a Super 12 rugby match that produced ten tries.
The result completed a double for the visitors on the South African leg of the southern hemisphere inter-provincial rugby union championship after an equally impressive victory over the Golden Cats last weekend.
And they collected a maximum five points - four for winning and a bonus for scoring six tries.
The Australians were leading 28-19 at halftime despite playing the final 10 minutes of the first half with 13 men.
Wing Lote Tuqiri received a yellow card from New Zealand referee Steve Walsh for using his knee illegally and was joined in the sin bin soon after by scrum-half Chris Whitaker for a professional foul.
But the Sharks, confident after a victory over the Brumbies last weekend, could not translate their numerical superiority into points, scoring only five while conceding six.
Fired up by a halftime tongue-lashing from New Zealand-born coach Kevin Putt, the Sharks camped in Waratahs territory for long periods.
But they had only a penalty from fly-half Butch James to show for much toil.
A match watched by 30,000 in balmy conditions then took a decisive turn with replacement wing Nathan Blacklock and fullback Mat Rogers dotting down for Australian tries, which centre Matthew Burke converted.
Replacement flanker Jone Tawake scored another Waratahs try and Burke added the points to give the Waratahs a 49-22 advantage before wing Wylie Human went over twice for the Sharks in a late surge.
Wallaby veteran Burke, making his 100th appearance for New South Wales, compiled 19 points via five conversions and three penalties.
Tuqiri, lock Tom Bowman, fly-half Shaun Berne, Blacklock, Rogers and Tawake crossed the line for the visitors, who entertain another South African outfit, Northern Bulls, in Sydney on Saturday.
Human and former Springbok centre Andre Snyman scored two tries each and full-back Ricardo Loubscher one for the Sharks.
James converted four and kicked a penalty.
