Waugh's Cup frustration continues
Steve Waugh's frustration with the World Cup selection process is continuing, with the Australian Test captain and one-day hopeful admitting he still doesn't know whether he was in contention for the trip to southern Africa.
Waugh's World Cup chances have been the source of constant speculation since he was left out of a 30-man preliminary squad named by national selectors earlier this month.
Initially it appeared that decision would rule him out of the tournament, which begins in February, however, ICC chief executive Mal Speed overnight left the door slightly open for Waugh to be selected in Australia's final squad of 15.
Speed said the ICC's rules were flexible and it would consider applications to have players from outside the 30 named in the final squads.
But if Speed's statement increased Waugh's sense of optimism, he wasn't showing it today.
Waugh, speaking after NSW's nine wicket Pura Cup defeat at the hands of Victoria at the SCG, conceded he was as confused as ever about his availability for cricket's showpiece event.
"I don't know what the situation is. I'm pretty amazed at some of the stuff I am reading," Waugh said.
"It's like watching a novel unfold and there's about ten per cent of truth to it. It's very hard to make heads or tails of what's going on.
"It changes that many times. There's been that many people change their mind over the last 24 hours I can't work it out. To me it seems crazy.
"I'm just going to stick to what I have always said - I'll make myself available, if I am playing well enough and the selectors think I should be there then I am more than happy to go."
Waugh also reiterated his belief that the idea of naming a 30-man squad so long before the tournament was ridiculous.
"You should be able to pick your best players and you should be able to pick them when you want. I don't see why you have to pick 30 to satisfy a World Cup brochure."
