Corica only deserves a week ban: coach

Sydney FC coach Terry Butcher believes veteran midfielder Steve Corica only deserves a one-match ban and called for Football Federation Australia to butt out.

The FFA cited Corica to appear before a disciplinary hearing n Sydney on Wednesday following his sending off for foul and abusive language towards referee Matthew Breeze in the match against the Newcastle Jets at the weekend.

However Butcher thought there was no need for the FFA to step in, with Corica copping an automatic one-game ban, as the A-League champions were already prepared to fine Corica on top of his suspension for Thursday's clash in New Zealand.

"He will be disciplined within the club that goes without saying," Butcher told AAP.

"I am bitterly disappointed the FFA has stepped in.

"I think that at the end of the day Stevey has admitted he was wrong, he has been fined by the club and suspended as well for the game on Thursday and that the FFA should have left it at that," Butcher said.

The glamour club has started the season in a sluggish manner and Butcher said the club accepted that opposing sides were hungry to claim their scalp.

The former England defender denied there was an attitude problem within his ranks after dropping Alvin Ceccoli for disciplinary reasons after openly taking issue with the coach's instructions on the weekend.

"I think it is frustration because we have not gone on to win matches and I think there is no malice intended," he said.

"I think it has just been borne out of frustration and the sooner we can take the frustration out on opponent by playing football the right way and winning games the right way that will alleviate the pressure on us.

"But we face intense pressure all season, we accept that and we get on with it."
