Surgery to end Everitt, Gaspar's season
Surgery will sideline Peter Everitt and Darren Gaspar for the rest of the AFL season and will probably end Everitt's time at Hawthorn.
While Richmond is likely to offer Gaspar a new one-year contract, Everitt remains in dispute with the Hawks over a contract extension.
Hawthorn only wants to offer a one-year agreement to Everitt, who has been linked strongly to Sydney beyond this season.
"Clubs have their policies, but who knows over the next five weeks?" Everitt said.
" ... There's no preferred destination at this stage, I'm sure those talks will be quite fruitful come (later in) August."
Everitt will have surgery on his troublesome ankle next week and Gaspar will go under the knife later this week to fix pinched cartilage in his right knee.
Everitt struggled on Friday night against Collingwood when he returned to the senior side.
"It's just something we couldn't get right, we thought we might be able to," he said.
"In hindsight, should we have had the operation in round eight or nine? Yes."
The ruck star has struggled with an ankle injury since round 10. He was not available to play in rounds 12 and 13 but returned to the side in round 14 against West Coast.
Everitt received a stomp to the foot in round 15 against Adelaide which further inflamed the ankle injury, and he missed the following week against Brisbane.
Gaspar was a late withdrawal from Saturday's loss to St Kilda and had to pass a fitness test this week to continue his season.
Richmond will probably want to keep the two-time All Australian full-back for at least one more year, particularly as promising young defender Will Thursfield is coming off a knee reconstruction.
