No rest for Socceroos after euphoric win
The Socceroos got back to business on Tuesday, with coach Guus Hiddink putting them straight into a training session the morning after their wonder World Cup start.
The players believe the heavy fitness work they have done in the three weeks leading into the 3-1 win over Japan in Kaiserslautern has done wonders, and will serve them well for the rest of the tournament.
Australia overran the Japanese in stifling 38-degree pitchside heat with three goals in the final six minutes, and that alone ensured there were no complaints about getting back to the training ground.
"The Australian team is physically in good condition - and it showed," midfielder Vince Grella said of the win over Japan.
"The preparation has been tough. We've worked hard - and that's why."
But the Socceroos will be given a rare day off on Wednesday to mix with their families or play golf at their five-star hideaway base, before they tackle World Cup favourite Brazil in their next Group F match in Munich on Sunday (Monday AEST).
It will even be a casual dress day for the team, who have been told there's no need to wear their Australian uniforms - street clothes will be fine.
"That's when the boys can relax and take their minds off football," assistant coach Graham Arnold said.
"We've been together for three and a half weeks.
"There's been a lot of pressure and a lot of focus, so they need a bit of down time to clear their heads.
"So we'll get them away from it all, have a hit of golf and visit their families, and not wear the Australian uniform.
"They can get dressed in casual gear to make them feel human again."
At this stage, Italy or the Czech Republic - both impressive winners in Group E matches on Monday - are staring down the Aussies in the round of 16 if the Socceroos can qualify first or second in their group.
Second place in Group F would pit the Socceroos against the winner of Group E in Kaiserslautern on June 26.
Topping Group F would mean a clash with Group E's second-placed team in Dortmund, north-west Germany on June 27.
The Socceroos have no injury concerns going into the Brazil match, but yellow cards and possible suspensions will now come into play following four to Australia against Japan.
Grella, John Aloisi, Craig Moore and two-goal hero Tim Cahill all picked up cards in the match, with two in the group stage earning an automatic one-match ban.
