Wallabies lock cleared of any damage
Wallabies lock David Giffin was unconscious for at least two minutes during Australia's 24-8 Rugby World Cup win over Argentina tonight but has been cleared of any serious damage.
Giffin fell awkwardly when competing for the ball at the restart of the second half and crashed on his head.
The Wallabies vice-captain lay motionless for several minutes while a neck brace was fitted and he was lifted onto a medicab.
He was taken to hospital for neurological tests and spinal X-rays but has been cleared of any serious damage, coach Eddie Jones said at a press conference.
"Giff's regained consciousness, everything's moving and he should be back at the hotel tonight so that's good for him," Jones said.
"He's had all the checks and there's no structural damage to his spine - he's regained his full senses now but whether he'll be available for next week we don't know."
Jones said Giffin was unconscious "for at least a couple of minutes on the field".
Jones was unsure whether the tournament rules demanded a stand-down period for a player who has suffered concussion but it's unlikely Giffin will be needed for Australia's next match against Romania in Brisbane next Saturday.
