FIFA may change refs for qualifier
FIFA will change the referees for the second leg of Australia's World Cup playoff with Uruguay in Sydney on November 16, a Uruguayan newspaper has reported.
The El Telegrafo of Montevideo says the sport's governing body will replace the Belgian officials with a trio from Spain following concerns from Uruguay that no Spanish-speaking referees had been appointed for either leg.
A set of Danish referees will control the first match in Montevideo on November 12 (November 13 AEDT).
Uruguay coach Jorge Fossati had previously criticised the choice of referees, believing it gave Australia an advantage because the officials came from countries neighbouring the homeland of the Socceroos coach, Dutchman Guus Hiddink.
The newspaper reports Luis Medina Cantalejo, Vicoriano Giraldez and Pedro Medina of Spain will now control the game instead of Belgian trio Frank De Bleeckere, Mark Simons and Peter Hermans.
