Powell does Best but Hinds out of sight
Wayward Tino Best fired the first shots but Daren Powell won the West Indies pace shootout in an encouraging tour start against Queensland on Thursday.
Powell took 4-58 on a bitter-sweet day for the Windies as they bowled out a star-studded Bulls outfit for a sub-par 323 but lost batting all-rounder Wavell Hinds for next week's first Test at the Gabba.
Hinds fractured the little finger on his left hand while fielding in the opening hour of the four-day tour match at Brisbane's Allan Border Field.
The tall left-hander has been ordered to keep the digit immobilised for 10 days and won't be available until the Second Test in Hobart, starting November 17.
Powell also produced concerns for the Windies by leaving the field with hip soreness after having the Bulls struggling at 8-215 when he caught the dangerous Andrew Symonds (55) in the outfield.
After resting arguably their three best paceman for the tour opener, the tourists failed to deliver the killer blow and unheralded leg-spinner Ryan Le Loux frustrated them with a mature 63.
Best (1-83 off 17 overs) and all-rounder Dwayne Bravo (3-86 off 19.4) were wayward and it was up to part-time spinner Marlon Samuels (2-79) to keep things tight.
The hostile Best got Matthew Hayden hot under the collar immediately by ripping out a lethal beamer with his first ball of the tour that narrowly missed the Test opener.
Dropped by Hinds five balls later off Best, Hayden failed to make the tourists pay when he played on for a duck, trying to pull Powell to mid-wicket next over.
Powell also managed to snare Australian all-rounder Shane Watson (20) with an edge that flew quickly to Chris Gayle at second slip.
