Langer backs WA to win cricket crowns
Western Australia cricket captain Justin Langer has said there's no reason why his team can't win the titles in both forms of the game this season.
WA finished third on the Pura Cup table and fourth on the ING Cup ladder last season and Langer said he has high expectations for the summer ahead.
"I think every year that you don't win both competitions is a disappointing year," the Test opener said. "It's what we've set out to do and undoubtedly we've got the talent and the experience (to do it).
"Last year was disappointing, well the last few years have been disappointing, so certainly we've set out this year to win both forms of the game and there's no reason why we can't do that," he said.
Langer drew on the gruelling pre-season, which started in June for his players, to explain why his team should be fitter and stronger for the campaign ahead and less likely to fall away towards the end, as they did last season.
"Basically it's the first time the team has operated as a professional outfit," Langer, one of the better performers with the bat during the recent Ashes disappointment, said. "I think the guys have trained twice a day for five days a week, and once on Saturday.
"While we've been professional in terms of being paid over the last few years, probably this winter has actually been the first time we've been a professionally-run outfit.
Langer was very positive about squad manager Wayne Clark, who has had his contract with the WACA extended through the 2006/07 season.
"I've said for the last two years I thought we were on the verge of a golden era for Western Australian cricket.
"Unfortunately we haven't delivered that yet, we've got close, but close isn't really good enough is it?
