Hall kicks Swans to miraculous victory
Sydney hardman Barry Hall kicked a goal after the siren as the Swans grabbed a miraculous six-point win over Brisbane in their Rivalry Round meeting at the Gabba.
Hall's fifth and final goal came from a free kick 20 metres out from goal with no time to spare. Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews later cast doubt over the merit of the decision.
Brisbane defender Chris Scott gave away the free kick in an innocuous contest with Hall who booted the Swans to their second victory of the season.
"Poetic justice that the game was decided by a free kick," Matthews snarled.
Hall's goal provided the Swans with their fourth win in the past six games against Brisbane, who have dominated the AFL in recent years with three premierships and another grand final appearance in the past four seasons.
After trailing by 32 points at three-quarter time, Sydney converted seven goals to one to in the final term to secure the 13.9 (87) to 11.15 (81) victory.
The Swans appeared to have no chance at the time but managed to over-run a tired Lions outfit that lost key running duo Nigel Lappin and Ashley McGrath.
Lappin suffered a severe corked thigh while McGrath joined him on the sidelines shortly after when he picked up an ankle injury.
Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes also shone for the Swans with two goals while dynamic Brisbane midfielder Jason Akermanis got the better of a fierce personal duel with Sydney tagger Jared Crouch.
Akermanis and Crouch put on a spectacle for the near sell-out crowd with a classic cat and mouse performance throughout the contest.
