Port survives huge scare to beat Lions

The Power won 11.9 (75) to 11.7 (73) after leading by 39 points 10 minutes into the last quarter.

The Lions scored six goals to Port's one behind in the final 20 minutes to draw within two points and twice had chances to mark close to goal in the final minutes, with ruckman Clark Keating coming desperately close to pulling down a pack mark 15 metres from goal.

The drama was added to by a faltering scoreboard time clock, which stopped working for about three minutes during the middle of the term, causing confusion on the ground as to how much time was left.

Port looked to have the game in its keeping after breaking it open in a devastating third term.

With the scores locked at 4.4 (28) at halftime, after a scrappy first half marred by a driving crosswind, the Power steamed away after the break.

The Power outscored its beaten grand final opponent of last year 5.4 to 1.1 in the third term, with key forwards Warren Tredrea and Brendan Lade dominating the term with two goals each, then kicked the first two goals of the final quarter.

Tredrea finished with five for the match and Lade with three, in what provided the home side with an edge, with Brisbane lacking marking targets with centre half-forward Jonathan Brown missing through suspension.

The Lions only managed five goals in the first three quarters, with only two of those coming from marks, with their sole recognised key forward Daniel Bradshaw double-teamed for much of the night by Port key defensive pair Darryl Wakelin and Chad Cornes.

Port dominated in the midfield in the third term, with Kane Cornes getting on top of a tiring Michael Voss, Roger James having a huge impact and Josh Francou also gradually returning to form after a quiet first half.

Power skipper Matthew Primus also dominated Keating in the ruck in the third quarter, with Keating tiring after rucking alone for most of the first three terms.
