Roos jump Swans at Manuka
Three final term goals from Shannon Grant against his former club have helped the Kangaroos to a 23 point AFL victory over Sydney at Manuka Oval.
On Saturday the Kangaroos trailed by 17 points midway through the third term before kicking the last seven goals of the match to seal an emphatic 12.10 (82) to 7.17 (59) win.
Former Adelaide and Hawthorn player Lance Picioane set up Saverio Rocca for a much-needed goal at the 18-minute mark of the third term to cut the lead to 10 points.
And a clever pass from captain Adam Simpson to Eddie Sansbury who goaled on the run seven minutes later saw the Roos go into the final change just five points adrift.
The first of Grant's two goals in two minutes early in the final quarter put them in front and when he marked and goaled from the top of the square at the 27 minute mark the game was well and truly beyond Sydney's reach.
The Roos were also well served by veteran Glenn Archer, whose 19 kicks and 10 marks were a standout, while Picioane, Michael Stevens and Brady Rawlings also got plenty of touches.
With regular ball winners Simpson, Brent Harvey and Daniel Wells kept under close attention all day, Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley praised the work of some of his less heralded players.
He singled out Stevens, Picioane, Sansbury and David Hale as standout performers in Saturday's win.
"That's where we're going to improve," Laidley said.
"If they don't do that, we aren't going anywhere and that's been their message all summer.
