Big day at Belmore
Bulldogs star Sonny Bill Williams found himself at the centre of a cross-hemisphere war of words before his management confirmed he was likely to re-sign with the NRL club as early as next week.
And in further developments at Belmore, second rower Willie Mason revealed a meeting with coach Steve Folkes had improved his chances of re-signing with the `Dogs.
Williams' management was in the sights of St Helens boss chairman Eamonn McManus after details emerged of the English Super League club's offer to the 19-year-old prodigy.
However, Gavin Orr of Pacific Sports Management denied he had leaked the information, made his peace with McManus and confirmed Williams was only days away from signing a new deal with the club.
"We'd like to sign him up to the Bulldogs for two or three years," Orr said.
"It really proves the point that the kid wants to play in the best competition and it's not all about money.
"He wants to play against Andrew Johns and Craig Wing and those guys. It's important for him."
McManus was seething after details of the offer, made last month, emerged.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported Williams was offered a deal worth $2.7 million over three years.
"We are appalled by the leaking of a strictly confidential indicative offer," said McManus.
