Sydney-Hobart winner tough to pick
Fancied super maxis Alfa Romeo and Wild Oats XI expect to run almost side by side in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race and punters are also having trouble separating the two new speed machines.
Three of the major online betting organisations had the two big boats virtually on the same line of betting, well ahead of the other super maxis Skandia and Konica Minolta, with last year's line honours winner Nicorette, known as AAPT2.
However, Saturday's weather forecast of freshening northeasterly breezes from Monday night possibly through to Wednesday afternoon favoured the bigger boats.
The forecast sparked little activity amongst punters however, with one spokesperson for Centrebet saying it had been the quietest Sydney to Hobart on record.
Centrebet reported no change to its line honours odds from Friday with Wild Oats XI still listed at $2.35 for a win, ahead of Alfa Romeo $2.45, Skandia $8.00, Konica Minolta $11.00 and AAPT2 $13.00.
There was however an interesting change in Centrebet's list of odds for the overall handicap winner with Wild Oats XI ($4.25) now jumping above Alfa Romeo ($4.50) after the former had been listed at $5.00 on Friday.
There was also no change from the overnight odds posted by Tabsport NSW which had Wild Oats XI and Alfa Romeo both listed at $2.40 for a win ahead of Skandia $8.00, Konica Minolta $11.00 and AAPT2 $13.00.
A Tabsport NSW official said there had been little activity on Saturday after one punter had on Friday placed $10,000 on Wild Oats XI to win, bringing down its price at the time from $2.50.
One organisation which did report marginal movement in its odds for line honours was Sportsbook.com, which had Alfa Romeo moving in slightly from $2.30 to $2.25, whilst Wild Oats XI moved out from $2.50 to $2.55.
The big boats also dominated Sportsbook's list of overall boats, with Alfa Romeo quoted at $5.50 and Wild Oats XI at $7.00.
Both Sportsbook and Centrebet had sixty-footer Loki as their third favourite in the betting for overall honours.
