Burke back in Wallabies squad
Veteran Matthew Burke has been recalled to the Wallabies squad for Saturday night's inaugural rugby Test against the Pacific Islanders in Adelaide.
The NSW Waratah will act as cover with backs Stirling Mortlock (knee) and Wendell Sailor (hamstring) suffering injuries before and during last night's 51-15 thumping of world champion England at Suncorp Stadium.
Burke faced first hand the might of the Pacific Islanders in his farewell match for NSW on Friday night with the Waratahs being belted 68-21 at Aussie Stadium.
A key member of Australia's 1999 World Cup winning side will continue his rugby career with English club side Newcastle in August after having signed a two-year deal with the Falcons.
Burke was on the bench for Australia's first Test victory over Scotland in Melbourne before he was dropped for the second Test in Sydney when Mortlock's return pushed Clyde Rathbone onto the bench.
The 77-Test player will be joined by NSW halfback Chris Whitaker and Sydney University tighthead prop David Fitter in the 27-man squad which will assemble at Coffs Harbour.
Fitter, who missed the entire Super 12 season with a foot injury, was named at the expense of Nic Henderson.
Wallaby coach Eddie Jones says Fitter is a good prospect at tighthead prop.
"David is a strong player and a good scrummager," he said in a statement.
"He has worked hard to recover from injury during the Super 12 and has already joined us for a session in Sydney a couple of weeks ago."
