Cats crush St Kilda by 60 points
Geelong have continued their superb AFL form with an impressive 60-point thrashing of St Kilda at Telstra Dome to complete round 10.
In what was meant to be an even clash between two well-credentialled sides, the Cats flexed their collective muscle and easily blew the Saints away.
The 19.11 (125) to 9.11 (65) victory was Geelong's fifth in a row and put St Kilda right in the mire, as the Saints have now dropped their past three games and languish in 13th position, well off the pace of the leading pack.
The Saints were in the game late in the second quarter as they crept within six points, only for Geelong to break clear again through a good snap by Brad Ottens and a set shot by Cameron Mooney.
Geelong then turned it on in the third quarter and party time generated five goals, most of them demoralising ones for their opposition.
Gary Ablett weaved in and out from a couple of would-be tacklers before goaling, Jimmy Bartel found Steve Johnson in space with a little chip, Mooney took a hanger over James Gwilt and ran into an easy goal and Nathan Ablett then threaded a great snap.
The Cats' seemingly endless source of scoring power now means they have won their past five games by a combined 337 points.
That exciting run ended the contest by the final change, and the Cats went on with the job by booting the only four goals of the last quarter.
Just as pleasing for Cats coach Mark Thompson were the occasions where his players were harder at the ball and ran hard for their teammates, on top of their regular flashes of brilliance.
Bartel had another great game in the midfield, Paul Chapman was a constant danger across half-forward in his return game after a hamstring injury, Johnson was creative in the forward line and Darren Milburn and David Wojcinski provided great drive from defence.
Cameron Ling also had a superb day in tagging skilful Saint Nick Dal Santo out of the contest and booting three goals himself, a game high.
Running half-back Jason Gram did a good job for St Kilda although he was twice caught holding the ball in front of goal, Nick Riewoldt tried and worked hard across half-forward and booted two goals (he also hit the post twice) and Luke Ball was their best onballer.
The tough tests will continue for St Kilda, who play the Kangaroos in round 11 in a game they must win to stay in touch with the eight.
