Eagles' Kermit ready for first MCG run
First-year West Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff will realise a boyhood dream when he runs out onto the MCG for Saturday's AFL qualifying final against Collingwood.
Melbourne-born Gaff grew up watching games at the MCG but is yet to play an AFL match at the venue.
The 19-year-old, snared with pick No.4 in last year's national draft, missed selection for the Eagles' round 10 loss to Collingwood at the 'G and said he was looking forward to gracing the hallowed turf on such a big occasion.
"I went there it would be a game every week as a kid, so it'll be a dream for me playing on the MCG," Gaff said.
"The national anthem and stuff like that before the game ... it will send a shiver down my spine.
"I think my family will be there - mum and dad and my brother and I think a few of my cousins might be there as well.
"I'm sure it will be a big thrill for them as well as me so hopefully we can get the right result for them."
Gaff said he and West Coast's other finals debutants would pick the brains of the club's wise veterans about how best to handle the occasion.
"I think we can all seek some advice from the older guys that have been there and done it before, like (Dean) Cox and Darren Glass and Andrew Embley who have all played in grand finals before," Gaff said.
"We'll seek a bit of feedback from those guys and hopefully that will put us in good stead on Saturday afternoon.
"Saturday morning there will be a fair few nerves but hopefully I can shake them off once the first siren goes."
Gaff has played 14 matches in his debut season, with six of those arriving as the team's nominated sub.
The 78kg speedster has already proven himself as a prolific ball-winner but said the step-up to AFL ranks had been a challenge.
"It's amazing sometimes how big some of the boys are out on the field, like Lance Franklin," he said.
"Even those guys (like Dane Swan and Scott Pendlebury), you feel pretty small compared to them.
"But I think when you've played a few games like I have towards the back-end of the season, you get more accustomed to it and you get a bit used to it.
"Those (Magpies) guys are obviously in really good form and obviously great players so I'm sure we'll be doing our best to limit their influence."
West Coast are keen to re-sign Gaff beyond the end of next season and it seems the feeling is mutual.
"I'm loving Perth at the moment," Gaff said.
"It's good weather over here. It's pretty cold and wet in Melbourne.
"I'm loving every moment of it, the staff and all the boys are fantastic and (so are) all the fans."
And after being nicknamed Kermit for his knack of being handed the sub's green vest, Gaff said he was unsure if he would have to don the mantle once again this weekend.
"I'll do whatever Woosha wants me to," he said.
