More daytime Tests planned for Wallabies
Sydney will stage two rugby Tests annually for the next 10 years, with a daytime match likely to become a regular part of the Wallabies calendar.
The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has signed a ten-year deal to stage a Test at the Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) from 2012 onwards.
The ARU confirmed earlier this year that the Wallabies would play a Bledisloe Cup match against New Zealand annually at ANZ Stadium over a ten-year period starting in 2012.
The SFS, which hasn't staged a Test since 1998, will host a Saturday afternoon match between Australia and Wales next year and looks set to host an annual mid-year Test.
ARU boss John O'Neill said the afternoon Test between Australia and Samoa at ANZ Stadium earlier this year worked a treat and thought a daytime game would become a regular part of the Wallabies home program.
"We'd like to be playing at least one daytime Test in Sydney and/or Brisbane every year, subject to the broadcasters in particular being happy," O'Neill told reporters at the SFS on Tuesday.
He doubted the SFS would be used for Tri Nations fixtures, saying Perth and Brisbane were more likely to host Tests featuring the Springboks.
O'Neill said playing a Test next door to the SFS at the SCG, another former rugby Test venue, was not out of the question.
Next year's SFS Test will be Australia's third of the year, following a likely mid-week match against Scotland in Newcastle on a Tuesday night and the first Test against Wales in Brisbane.
