Knights hold breath over Mullen, Fa'aoso
Injury-hampered Newcastle will have a nervous wait again this week, with stars Jarrod Mullen and Richie Fa'aoso pulling up sore from Saturday night's 18-0 win over Cronulla.
The early diagnosis on Mullen is that he will be right to take on Gold Coast next Sunday, however coach Rick Stone said his halfback might require further scans on his troublesome pectoral muscle.
The painful pec injury kept Mullen out for two months, and in his two matches back in the NRL he's shown discomfort on the field.
In-form prop Fa'aoso has a grade one hamstring tear and the Knights camp are resigned to losing him for at least the clash with the Titans at Ausgrid Stadium.
The tearaway hit man has been strong for the Knights all year and said he wasn't confident after feeling it tear in the second half against the Sharks.
"I hope there's nothing there but I felt it go so hopefully it's not as bad as I think it's," he said.
"Hopefully the hamstring isn't as bad as I think it's so I'll keep working hard to get us into the top eight.
"It's pretty sore, but hopefully I'm just carrying on."
Stone said the club expects to welcome back Evarn Tuimavave, Dan Tolar and Neville Costigan from the casualty ward this week and could also be bolstered by the return of Adam MacDougall.
The coach, who has been forced to reshuffle his side on a weekly basis this season because of a heavy injury toll, said Mullen will be watched closely.
"He felt his pec again as he did last week but he got through the rest of the game," Stone said.
"He might need some scans, we'll get a check on him again but at the end of the game he wasn't that keen to come off so he was pretty confident of playing out the game.
"We brought him off probably right at the very end in the last couple of minutes so he's in good spirits and he's in a position where we think he's going to be playing next week which is good."
The Knights are in the top eight fight right up to their eyeballs and Fa'aoso believes their cursed run with injuries might eventually work in their favour.
Young players like Ryan Stig and Joel Edwards have gained invaluable experience throughout the year and Fa'aoso is predicting a strong finish.
"It does get a bit frustrating, the team changes a fair bit but those boys who have come up have really stood up, so confidence is really good," he said.
"We fell in love with ourselves over the last two weeks and we've had to get back on track.
"Even though we've still got a fair bit to work on, our attack was better (against the Sharks at Toyota Stadium)."
