GWS ready for AFL showdown with Suns
Fledgling AFL side Greater Western Sydney is ready to clash with the reserves of the Gold Coast, a club which has been a source of guidance and rivalry for the competition's newcomers.
This weekend, GWS will be pitted against a Suns outfit which could potentially feature former Collingwood ruckman Josh Fraser.
It's a fixture that will be teeming with the AFL's best teenage talent, and Giants coach Kevin Sheedy can't wait to compare notes.
"We're looking forward to having a look at their new list and rating where we are compared to them, coming in 12 months later," Sheedy told AAP.
"It's a great opportunity to compare the history of the early years of these two new fledgling clubs.
"Eventually, when this team is up and running, it will be a huge rivalry clash."
The two expansion sides have played once before, but the condensed pre-season clash had 20-minute halves.
Sheedy was keen to praise Gold Coast list manager Scott Clayton, but didn't buy into headlines suggesting GWS could learn a lot from the Suns.
"I don't think they've done too badly, so we can learn that they've done a pretty good job with their list management, that's what we'll learn," he said.
However, the Suns have recently provided some off-field pointers for the Giants.
A GWS contingent, including membership manager Chris Mintern, toured Metricon Stadium last week when it was unveiled.
There were plenty of differences between the Carrara Stadium project and the ongoing redevelopment of Sydney Showground, the Giants' future AFL home patch, but Mintern hoped there would also be some similarities.
"Everything is close by (at Metricon). There were no real queues. I'm sure that's something that we're going to look for at the Showgrounds, that ease of access," he said.
"They were fantastic in terms of sharing ideas. We are two different markets, but the common thread is making sure the customer has a great experience."
The Suns have been sharing some insights from their maiden AFL season.
"We have that open line of communication, so if we are thinking about an idea or an initiative for our members, then we might check with the Gold Coast," Mintern added.
"It's probably a couple of times a month (we talk). It might be an email here or there, or a quick five-minute call."
The Giants have put together back-to-back wins for the first time since the club's inception, with the victories coinciding with a move forward by rugby league convert Israel Folau.
Folau has booted seven goals in the past two weeks and will continue to play as a forward.
Folau might be shifted back to defence later in the year, but don't expect the 22-year-old to enter the ruck anytime soon.
"He's had some problems overcoming an ankle injury, so I don't need to see him jumping up and down on that. He went into the ruck for a few minutes and I said 'get him out of there'," Sheedy said.
"At one stage in a game, we just needed a tall person to go into a centre bounce (and he did it). I said 'that's the first and the last centre bounce he'll try for a while'."
Folau injured his ankle while training last month but missed only one game and is playing unburdened.
