Cats' Kelly taking nothing for granted
Amid all the uncertainty about how Geelong will perform this AFL season, we know some things for certain after two rounds.
The unbeaten Cats remain a very proud, competitive team who are determined to stay in the top four.
To this end, new coach Chris Scott is blooding several kids to balance the big group of older players in the team.
But Cats midfielder James Kelly does not want to know about the widely-held belief, that his team are certain to beat Port Adelaide at home on Sunday.
Even the staunchest Power fan will concede that the Cats will be strong favourites against Port, who are winless.
"We don't want to get distracted by that at all, we still take Port Adelaide very seriously," Kelly said.
"This is still the AFL - every team is capable of winning.
"We want to approach the game how we do any other week, as if we were playing Collingwood or St Kilda, prepare as best we can and play our way on Sunday."
The Cats are one of the most intriguing AFL stories this year, thanks to the departures of coach Mark Thompson and Gary Ablett and the big group of players, like Kelly, who are in their late 20s.
Earlier this week, Scott bluntly said the team understood why there were question marks over their prospects, despite tough wins over St Kilda and Fremantle.
"If you said at the start of pre-season that we'd win the first two games, you'd always take that," Kelly said..
"Scotty's right, we haven't proven anything, but we haven't taken too much notice of what people say outside the club.
"We've had a good pre-season and a lot of our older guys, even though they are older, they're still really fit and playing good footy."
Kelly has also said it is irrelevant that Geelong had so many older players.
He notes that their sustained success over the last few years, including three-straight grand finals for two premierships, has set a benchmark for the team's newcomers to follow.
Plenty of other teamswould also dearly love the depth of experience that runs through the side.
It meant that when Joel Selwood, Tom Lonergan and Cameron Mooney were late withdrawals for last weekend's away game against Fremantle, they could absorb youngsters Cam Guthrie, Daniel Menzel and Allen Christensen - and win.
"The one thing people forget is you have older guys, but you have a lot of experience in the side and that's one thing in football you can't buy," he said.
The Cats will welcome back Selwood, Mooney and Scarlett for Sunday's game, while the Power have recalled Daniel Motlop and Hamish Hartlett.
There is also one other given at Geelong - captain Cameron Ling has revealed the widespread hope among the players that when Scott eventually loses his temper, Kelly will be the victim.
"Everyone is secretly hoping I cop the first spray, but I hope Lingy gets it for being too slow or something like that," said Kelly, one of the Cats' most popular players.
