Turner excited by move to outside centre
Waratahs flyer Lachie Turner says he'd like to make a permanent switch to outside centre for the Super Rugby season after a strong performance against Fiji on Friday night.
NSW coach Chris Hickey is keen to see how Turner trials in the No.13 jersey, and was impressed with what he saw in the 41-13 warm-up win over the Fijians at the Sydney Football Stadium.
Turner bagged a first-half double and showed good awareness playing one man in from his usual position on the wing.
The 23-year-old, who was anointed the fastest man in football last year, combined well with the Tahs' playmakers and winger Drew Mitchell in some slick attacking moves.
While ideally he'd like to stay at outside centre, Turner said he'll do whatever's best for the team.
"At this stage I'm really happy playing 13, it means I'm one step closer and I get a few more touches so I'm really looking forward to hopefully staying there," he said.
"But if they see fit that it's not the spot for me then I'm more than happy to move back out.
"My only goal is to help the team in whatever way I can and if the team wants me at 13 and we think it fits best then that's where I'll be, but we've got some pretty capable centres running around."
Turner admitted he had some timing and handling issues but overall he was happy with his initiation.
Working with a personal trainer over the off-season, Turner has improved his strength and ball-running.
"I got the heads up that it might happen about two months ago so I had a really strong off-season and worked on all the attributes I needed to work on to play outside," he said.
"It was nice to put some of that out on the field (last night) and I feel really comfortable with a few of the things I've been working on and there's a few other things I may have to go away now and work on.
"It was nice to get the first one out of the way, I had the last 20 minutes to sit back and think about it and I probably gave myself a pass mark."
Turner said he was reinvigorated by his return to the Wallabies squad at the end of last year and he'll now strive for a World Cup berth.
