Ferris to miss Ireland Six Nations opener
Ireland's Six Nations injury crisis deepened on Saturday as forward Stephen Ferris was ruled out of next weekend's opening match with Italy.
The Irish Rugby Football Union confirmed Ferris would miss the match following a consultation with a knee specialist.
Ferris suffered a cartilage injury to his right knee during Ulster's recent European Cup game against Aironi and was unable to train with the Ireland squad last week during the Limerick training camp.
The statement said Ferris was also doubtful for Ireland's match against France next month although he has not been ruled out.
Ireland will already be missing number eight Jamie Heaslip and Tommy Bowe for the Italy match, while John Hayes, Shane Horgan, Geordan Murphy, Andrew Trimble, Rob Kearney and Jerry Flannery are also injured.
