Beale and gen next step up
Kurtley Beale and the Wallabies' generation next have begun running the show off the field almost as much as they're running on it.
Beale puts his own brilliant form, and that of fellow whiz kids James O'Connor, Quade Cooper and Will Genia, down to a new environment encouraging the side's young guns to speak up more.
"The younger guys are stepping up and creating a new culture," Beale said after his man-of-the-match performance in the 25-16 win over Wales.
"There's a really good balance. A lot of the senior guys are really stepping back and letting the young guys come through and kind of give their point on how to play and give ideas."
Beale says the change came about during this year's Tri-Nations series, which included his heroic late penalty goal for a highveld hoodoo-busting win in Bloemfontein.
"Obviously there were some tough times there, we all got through that together, and there were some really joyous moments there," he said.
"(It's) just the whole environment, everyone being together, sticking together, and everyone knowing their part in the team.
"No one's really jumping out of their shoes and trying to be someone else. They are all being themselves and we're all respecting that."
Beale's speed has been a revelation and his performance at the Millennium Stadium earned him the second players' player award of his short Test career as well as the official gong.
He scored one and almost nabbed a second that would have been a contender for try of the decade.
Winning the contest for a midfield bomb, he then kicked the ball once, toed it ahead a second time and regathered only for it to come loose at the last moment.
Beale shed seven kilos between the end of the Super 14 and the Tri-Nations this year and that's been enough to get his speed up without extra sprint work.
"It's just speed endurance and when you've got the GPS on it makes you want to run faster just to see the results," he said.
"I haven't been really concentrating on that much but it's very good to see people are noticing.
"Now that I've shed some kilos it's a lot easier to get around the park and it's a lot easier to do what I want to do."
