O'Connor ready to step up for Wallabies
Wallabies hero James O'Connor has declared himself ready to take on the kicking duties fulltime after booting Australia to a long-awaited victory over the All Blacks.
O'Connor booted two wide conversions from two attempts, including his match-winner after the siren for the 26-24 win in Hong Kong, after the Wallabies first two kickers had struggled miserably.
Between them, Kurtley Beale (0/2) and Matt Giteau (1/4) managed just one from six, Beale unable to continue his sharp-shooting from Pretoria and Giteau replaced by Berrick Barnes in the 64th minute.
Australia cracked a 10-Test losing streak against the All Blacks after O'Connor scored in the 82nd minute and then struck the ball beautifully to clinch victory.
"The heart just started pumping a bit faster and my legs got a little bit heavier," O'Connor said.
"I looked at the scoreboard (and thought), 'Oh great'.
"I obviously knew I had to get this one to win it.
"I was just pushing all that out of my mind and just focusing on the kick and if I got a good strike on the ball then the outcome would be good.
"(I took) a few deep breaths and just focused on my technique and when I looked up I was happy enough to see it go through." The pressure kick was even more remarkable because the 20-year-old had needed to calm himself down after scoring the five-pointer that made it 24-24.
But long hours with Western Force kicking coach Daryl Halligan and recent Wallabies consultant Braam van Straaten have begun paying off.
"I have a target ... if there's a bit of advertising I focus on a letter, if there's a hole I focus on that or an empty seat," O'Connor said.
"And then line myself up on the ball then it's pretty much a smooth run-up, get through the ball and stay over it so I don't come up too early." O'Connor said he would welcome the kicking duties but isn't counting on being handed them.
"I'd definitely put my hand up," he said.
"I still see Gitty (Giteau) as our No.1 goalkicker, at training he still slots more than any of us.
"But if the opportunity comes, I'd love it." Coach Robbie Deans will decide before this Saturday night's Test against Wales who will be his first-choice kicker.
Beale has been used for long-range efforts with Giteau still the side's No.1 despite his worrying form, while O'Connor will come into calculations.
"He's shown that he's capable, as have a number of them," Deans said.
"They've made significant progress in the last few weeks to be honest.
"They're all kicking better but James has shown he loves the challenge." Deans said that would not necessarily impact on Giteau's place in the side.
"It's just one component," Deans said.
"It's not the defining component.
"We were totally reliant on Gits previously, now we're not which is great. It's good for him, it's good for us." The Wallabies flew out for London on Sunday night and will head to Cardiff on Monday to begin preparations for next weekend's Test against Wales at the Millennium Stadium.
Five-eighth Quade Cooper has a sore elbow but medical staff believe the injury is minor.
