Lampard wants Capello to stay
Frank Lampard wants Fabio Capello to stay on as England coach, even if the Three Lions crash out of the World Cup at the group stage.
With England needing to beat Slovenia on Wednesday to be sure of progressing to the last 16, Capello has refused to rule out quitting if his squad end up flying home early in what would be the country's earliest exit from a World Cup since 1958.
But Lampard said Monday he would like to see the manager see out a contract that runs up until Euro 2012, regardless of what happens on Wednesday in Port Elizabeth.
"I've been lucky enough to work with some fantastic managers and Fabio Capello is right up there," Lampard said. "I've really enjoyed working with him and respected him and I really would like him to stay."
While Lampard acknowledged that Capello's style was "very strong," - a reference to the authoritarian tendencies that have reportedly triggered murmurs of discontent among some players - he said England's players retained faith in his ability to lead them to success.
He also insisted that Capello was a less aloof figure than is portrayed.
"It seems to me the manager and (his deputy) Franco Baldini have always been very approachable," the Chelsea midfielder added.
Referring to the rumours of disgruntlement in the England camp, Lampard added: "It has always been the same. The thing with football is that regardless of what manager you have had, there are always up and down moments.
"The truth is that (unrest in the camp) is not the case and we are all looking for a way to turn a disappointing performance against Algeria into a win on Wednesday.
"The manager has the complete respect of everyone and he respects the players. We all want nothing more than a win to go through and to go far in the tournament."
Lampard also believes the negative atmosphere surrounding England was inevitable after their draws with the United States and Algeria, with the performance in the latter match having been particularly flat.
But he underlined that morale and confidence can change quickly.
"We can all get carried away with wins and bad losses in football. At Chelsea, after we went out of the Champions League to Inter Milan, we did not believe we would go on and win the double but we turned it around.
"It is the same with England we have got to take the negatives from the Algeria game and use them to turn it around.
"If you look around the tournament, there are big, big teams in a similar position to us. We have just got to get on with it."
