Membership figures don't add up: Smorgon
Western Bulldogs president David Smorgon says there needs to be greater consistency in the way AFL clubs report membership figures.
Smorgon said the Bulldogs have set a new club record this season, with 32,700 members already, more than 1,000 up on their previous best, helped by their pre-season competition win.
But Smorgon said unlike several other clubs which boasted considerably larger figures, all of the Dogs' members were for a full season.
"It's about time there was consistency in the way club memberships are reported," he said at the club's official function ahead of Sunday's match against Hawthorn.
"There are some clubs that offer three-game, four-game or five-game packages which they include as full members.
"We as a club don't offer those packages, we believe in full tote odds, so our packages range from $180 upwards, we don't offer those smaller packages.
"Is it right for some clubs to say our membership includes three-game packs that are being sold for $70 or $80 a year, as opposed to clubs such as the Bulldogs that only take into account full club memberships?
"I think there's an issue, we need to compare apples with apples."
