Melbourne drink to Dragons disposal
Melbourne have rated their Good Friday disposal of fellow NRL title contenders St George Illawarra as their best display so far this season.
After being held to 4-0 at half-time in the round four match at Etihad Stadium, the Storm ripped into the previously unbeaten Dragons with three second-half tries for a 17-4 win to reaffirm their status as the game's dominant side.
They even granted themselves a few drinks afterwards to celebrate the victory, lifting a self-imposed booze ban which they had put in place to assist their recovery with three away rounds to start the NRL competition.
"It was our best performance by a long way," said veteran Storm prop Ryan Tandy after training on Monday.
"We were looking for a very solid performance and we did that in defence and attack and we were very pleased to get a win."
Despite their satisfaction, Melbourne are refusing to get carried away by the performance and the plaudits that accompanied it.
"I think everyone, the media, probably beat it up a little bit bigger than it probably is, that we're the premiership favourites, but we're not looking at that, it's round four, it's not round 24 but definitely it was our best performance."
The next match is on Friday night at Skilled Stadium against the Titans, who at times looked in disarray against North Queensland without injured halfback Scott Prince.
The 32-18 loss was their first of the season.
"Prince is their top playmaker so it's a huge loss to their side but they've got great people who can fill in there.
"They've got Preston Campbell and they've got Greg Bird, whose a recent addition but he's represented Australia and NSW in the halves so they're still going to have a lot of strike power there.
"It's going to be a big game, playing up there is no easy task," Tandy said.
While the Storm enjoyed a few Easter drinks, they're undecided whether they will continue to abstain.
"We realised how important the first couple of away games were and we knew we had to knuckle down and get them done.
"Obviously being off the drink helps that because you recover quicker, you train harder, you train better, you play better.
"We were rewarded with a drink on Friday night but who knows, we might have another couple of weeks off the drink now.
"It's one in-all in, so whatever the senior players and Craig decide."
