Blues outclassed by Eagles in Perth
Carlton's midfield and forward line failed to fire as West Coast powered their way to a 39-point victory in their AFL practice match at Leederville Oval in Perth on Saturday.
The Eagles, minus the likes of Daniel Kerr, Matt Priddis, Mark LeCras, Dean Cox and Josh Kennedy, set up the 16.9 (105) to 9.12 (66) win with a seven-goals-to-two opening half, with Adam Selwood, Patrick McGinnity, Beau Waters, Mitch Brown (three goals), Shannon Hurn and Tom Swift performing important roles for the home side.
Chris Judd battled valiantly for the visitors but had few allies as West Coast's midfield took control to starve Carlton's forward line.
Jarrad Waite, playing his first match since seriously injuring his knee in round nine last year, came on in the second half but had his hands full trying to contain Lynch and Brown.
Blues duo Robert Warnock and Shaun Hampson worked well in tandem in the ruck, limiting the influence of Eagles big man Nic Naitanui in the first half.
But Naitanui's explosive third quarter, when he dominated the ruck hit-outs and kicked two goals, helped the Eagles sprint out to a match-winning 44-point lead.
The Blues, missing Bryce Gibbs, Matthew Kreuzer, Brock McLean and Bret Thornton, could have been blown away in the opening term but the Eagles failed to fully capitalise on their chances, although it was enough to open a 14-point lead at the first break.
Marc Murphy, playing his first match since hip surgery in January, kicked a nice goal late in the second term when he evaded two tacklers before kicking truly.
The 22-year-old, who played three quarters of the match and got better as the game wore on, could have had two goals in a minute but sprayed a simple set shot from 37m out on a slight angle.
Eddie Betts created plenty of spark when given the chance and finished with two goals for the Blues.
