Valentine's day arrives for Brumbies
Former Wallabies halfback Josh Valentine will play his first game for the Brumbies when the ACT side take on Bourgoin-Jallieu in the opening match of their tour of France on Saturday morning (AEST).
Valentine will run on for his fourth Australian Super 14 franchise as one of eight players making their Brumbies debut in the staring XV at Stade Pierre Rajon.
He will partner Australian under-20s playmaker Matt Toomua in the halves.
Brumbies academy back-rower Tevita Metuisela, formerly with NRL club the Wests Tigers, is another who will earn his first start in game one of the four-match tour, which includes clashes with Sonny Bill Williams' Toulon and Craig Gower's Bayonne.
"This tour is not a holiday and we're going across with the intention of winning all four games," coach Andy Friend said.
"This first match is essential in setting some standards for the remaining three matches so it's important we get off to a good start.
"We've had limited preparation time as a squad but the majority of players involved are very familiar with the structures in place and the style of play and we'll be looking to build on those as the tour goes on."
Brumbies starting XV: Pat McCabe, Alfi Mafi, Andrew Smith, Tyrone Smith, Francis Fainifo, Matt Toomua, Josh Valentine, Stephen Hoiles (capt), Colby Faingaa, Tevita Metuisela, Ben Hand, Ed Gower, Salesi Ma'afu, Anthony Hegarty, Jerry Yanuyanutawa.
