Hodgson loving life at the Bulldogs
While Brett Kimmorley, Michael Ennis and Ben Hannant have been lauded for their contribution to the Bulldogs' NRL resurgence on and off the field, Michael Hodgson has been very much the quiet achiever.
The unassuming front-rower was one of several shrewd acquisitions made by coach Kevin Moore when he joined from the Gold Coast at the start of the season.
And the former Parramatta and Canberra prop is glad he made the decision to move back south of the Tweed.
"It has worked out really well, the team is winning games, there is a great bunch of blokes here and around the club and Kevin is a good operator," he told AAP.
After starting his career with the Eels, Hodgson enjoyed a seven-year stint with Canberra, where his wife and two daughters are still based, before linking up with the Titans for their first two seasons in the NRL.
But just as the 29-year-old was pondering retirement after not being offered a new deal by the Titans, the Bulldogs came knocking and according to the club's football manager Frank Barrett, he has been one of the their best-ever signings.
"Mick is one of the most professional players I have ever come across, his body is a temple and the example he sets to our young guys about how to prepare to play and how to train has been superb," Barrett said.
"I think he is also playing some of the best football of his career. People questioned us when we signed him, but his performances for us this season have been as good as anyone in the NRL.
"This time last year he was thinking about retiring. Now he is talking about how many years he wants to play."
Hodgson has been a virtual ever-present in the Bulldogs' front row this season, missing just two games and will face his former employers in Brisbane on Friday.
Unlike previous years, the Titans have maintained their form this season after a great start and Hodgson is predicting a tough game at Suncorp Stadium.
"A lot of people have been surprised at how well the Titans have gone this season, but I'm not one of them," Hodgson said.
"I know what a good coach John Cartwright is and the young guys that were just coming through when I was there are now fully-fledged NRL players and doing really well.
"They also have some really experienced heads like Scott Prince, Luke Bailey and Mat Rogers, it is going to be a really tough game for us.
"But the win in New Zealand last week with so many players out, was a massive boost to our confidence and we will go up to Brisbane in great shape."
