Bailey puts up broken arm for Origin III
Injured Gold Coast prop Luke Bailey says he is willing to earn the wrath of Titans management by putting his hand up for Origin III in a bid to stop the revolving door of NSW frontrowers.
Despite breaking his arm just three weeks ago, Bailey said he would answer the call from Blues selectors already reeling from a fourth-straight series defeat and the loss of game two prop Michael Weyman to injury.
NSW will name their side for game three on Monday night, which is a week before Bailey's anticipated return for the Titans and ten days out from the Origin series finale.
"I don't think the club would be stoked about it, but if I'm available I'd throw my hand up," Bailey said of Blues selection.
"I've got to get through the week of training first - it's hard to say ... I'm hoping for a pretty quick recovery the next couple of days.
"It's only three weeks on Monday since I fractured it ... it's still a bit tender - the small crack was right on the screw holes of the other fracture where the plate was.
"It was quite painful but it was still only a small fracture so hopefully it's almost healed.
"If it comes through (training) and the scans are all good on Friday - there's no reason why I shouldn't be available especially when they're down on troops."
Bailey's offer is a sign of just how bare NSW's front row stocks are heading up to Suncorp Stadium, which was also evidenced by the fact they took only three props into the crucial second game in Sydney.
One of those, Weyman, will miss game three with an ankle injury.
Despite indifferent performances over the first two games, incumbents Justin Poore and Brent Kite are likely to hold onto their spots as NSW look to end their chop and change approach to the front row.
Since 2006 - when Queensland claimed the first of their now record four straight series wins - NSW have used seven different starting combinations up front in 11 matches.
Compare that to Queensland who have used just two - Steve Price and Petero Civoniceva the mainstays of the Maroons pack with Carl Webb filling in for one game when Price was injured.
Cronulla youngster Luke Douglas has been tossed up as one potential candidate, but Bailey called on NSW selectors to look outside the square in pushing for Bulldogs veteran Michael Hodgson to be picked.
"If I don't put my own hand up I'd definitely be putting his hand up ... he's been just as good as Ben Hannant for the Bulldogs - I'd love to see him get a run," Bailey said.
"NSW are lacking those sort of blokes that get the team together."
Another name being tossed up is Newcastle's versatile forward Chris Houston, who has played everywhere bar hooker in the Knights pack this season.
Injured Newcastle prop and former Blues enforcer Ben Cross said Houston could take on the role Steve Simpson filled so successfully for the Blues when he shuffled between the back and front row.
"He's been filling my void for a little bit and Simmo's void when he's been out so he's been up and down all season - he's shown that he can do both," Cross said.
Houston will get the perfect opportunity to impress Blues coach Craig Bellamy when the Knights take on Melbourne on Saturday.
The other Knight keen on a big night will be halfback Jarrod Mullen, who along with veteran Brett Kimmorley, is in the frame to replace the out of favour Peter Wallace in the NSW No.7 jumper.
