O'Connor waits for Wallabies No.15 news
Wallabies teenager James O'Connor says playing in next Saturday's rugby Test against France would be the biggest game of his life, but he's sweating on whether he will get a start.
The versatile 18-year-old back started at fullback in Australia's two Tests against Italy, scoring three tries in the first.
However, Adam Ashley-Cooper, who started at fullback in the Wallabies' season-opener against the Barbarians, started off the bench in the second Test against Italy and could regain the No.15 jersey against the French.
Fullback is one of the more contentious positions for the Australian selectors, who expected to revert to the majority of the side which started the first Test against Italy, after making multiple changes for the second encounter.
Asked if he was holding his breath about being chosen in the side to be named on Tuesday, O'Connor said: "Definitely I am."
"He (Ashley-Cooper) played a blinder on the weekend, he is in such good form.
"He's a great all-round player and I'm learning so much from him."
O'Connor said Ashley-Cooper had told him just to play his natural game.
While some people have suggested O'Connor should be brought along gradually after becoming the second youngest Wallaby, the confident teenager was looking forward to stepping up against France.
"Physically I am up to the challenge, but I think it's good having a development program that the coaches develop me and see me keep picking up a level," O'Connor said.
"I'm looking forward to this challenge, it's going to be the biggest game of my life so far."
Enjoying life at fullback, O'Connor nevertheless looked forward to eventually moving closer to the action.
"I'd like to get around that 10, 12 area to get my hands on the ball and be that decision maker, but at the moment I am happy at 15," O'Connor said.
"I'm having a ball out there, getting put in some space and getting some one-on-ones."
Entrusted with the goalkicking responsibilities last weekend, O'Connor said he also wanted to develop that facet of his game.
Expected to re-commit to the Western Force next week when the Wallabies have a break in their schedule, O'Connor supported the Perth-based franchise's acquisitions of the World Cup-winning Springbok five-eighth Andre Pretorius.
"It's a huge bonus for us. Andre is a great player and I think he will guide the team around well next year," he said.
Team management reported no major injury worries following the 34-12 win over Italy in Melbourne.
France head into the one-off Test at ANZ Stadium having split a two-game series in New Zealand against the All Blacks.
