Dockers won't get spanked: Harvey
Coach Mark Harvey denies Fremantle are in line for a spanking despite losing another key player for Saturday's AFL clash with Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.
Fremantle will field at least one and as many as three debutants against the Power after defender Antoni Grover (calf) became the latest player to join the club's bulging injury list.
Des Headland (quad), Luke McPharlin (hip) and Michael Johnson (ankle) have also been ruled out of the match, with Harvey confirming on Wednesday rookie Clancee Pearce will be elevated to make his debut against the Power.
Goalsneak Hayden Ballantyne, snared with pick No.21 in last year's national draft, will also make his debut if he can overcome a cork suffered during his five-goal performance in the WAFL last Saturday.
And Harvey did not rule out handing ruckman Zac Clarke an AFL berth, although the 19-year-old is a more unlikely starter given he played in the WAFL on Monday and would be coming off a five-day break.
Harvey expects another 19-year-old, speedy midfielder Stephen Hill, to line up against the Power despite the severe cork he suffered to his hip last week.
While Port Adelaide have injury concerns of their own, with playmakers Shaun Burgoyne and Chad Cornes to miss with knee injuries and mercurial forward Daniel Motlop (ankle) still in doubt, they are rated raging $1.18 favourites by TAB Sportsbet.
The Dockers are a $4.50 outsider but a defiant Harvey remained unfazed at the task confronting his baby-faced unit.
"You can always look at the amount of injuries you've got and ... use that as an excuse to the outcomes of games (but) I would like to see it the other way," Harvey said.
"I've seen some fantastic wins in my time in football when you haven't necessarily got your best players and that will be the attitude we have.
"They won't intimidate our young side.
"What happens during this time is we find out a lot about the list and the experience of guys that we are giving opportunities to will hold us in good stead going forward in the next year or two."
Harvey did concede he had never experienced an injury crisis like the current one facing Fremantle.
Star midfielder Rhys Palmer and tagger Ryan Crowley suffered season-ending injuries earlier in the year, while defender Roger Hayden is still at least six weeks away from resuming after fracturing his leg.
Forward Chris Mayne (foot) has been consigned to a moon boot since the start of the season but is expected to resume playing duties after the mid-season break.
Harvey described Pearce, a 184cm defender who gathered 26 possessions for Swan Districts last week, as a player who would bring "toughness and honesty".
"He's got an Indian background and to my knowledge there's only been two or three players with that type of background that have played AFL, so multicultural society is certainly coming to the fore at AFL level and it's one of those great stories," he said.
