Fletcher injury a bad break for Bombers
Essendon have confirmed veteran defender Dustin Fletcher has suffered a broken leg and could be out of AFL action for up to two months.
What was meant to be a night of celebration for Fletcher in his 300th game ended bitterly as the fullback fractured the fibula in his left leg during the Bombers' loss to the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night at the Gabba.
Fletcher, who this week will turn 34, suffered the injury when his right leg contacted the back of his left as he was tackled by an opponent.
The Bombers said on their website on Sunday Fletcher would undergo scans on Monday to determine the length of his absence.
A best-case scenario would be a hairline fracture which would mean a month out, whereas he could be sidelined for eight weeks if the damage was more significant, the club said.
West Coast also have waiting to do, as they are considering sending star midfielder Daniel Kerr for blood tests to determine why he struggled through the loss to Fremantle on Saturday.
Kerr, who had just 16 disposals for the game, cramped badly after half-time and also vomited several times during the match.
Although players running to a standstill and vomiting afterwards is quite common in the AFL, Eagles coach John Worsfold is concerned at the number of times it has happened to Kerr, who has vomited on at least three occasions during a match this season.
"(He was) vomiting badly, which is not unusual, a lot of players do vomit, but then to be cramping up badly a few minutes into the third quarter where he couldn't get rid of the cramp (is a concern)," Worsfold said.
"I will certainly be asking the question (to our medical staff) 'Is there some reason Daniel was like that?'"
Collingwood will assess the fitness of several big names during the week in the lead-up to Monday week's clash against St Kilda.
Big forward Anthony Rocca (ankle) and defender Heath Shaw (hamstring) withdrew before Friday night's win over North Melbourne, while forward Paul Medhurst injured an ankle during the game.
Those setbacks come on the absence of half-forward Alan Didak (hamstring).
The Saints will be without half-back Xavier Clarke for the remainder of the season after he suffered a serious knee injury in the VFL on Saturday.
Young Port Adelaide midfielder Hamish Hartlett is expected to miss a couple of games with a hamstring injury suffered against Adelaide on Saturday night.
The Bombers say onballer Mark McVeigh is a chance to return to play Hawthorn on Friday night after his recent struggles with an ankle injury.
