Struggling Sharks reluctant ambassadors

He's hardly enamoured at the prospect of giving up home ground advantage, but Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart claims the Sharks' plan to play one NRL match a year in Adelaide for the next three seasons is a necessary evil.

It's all part of the chase for the almighty dollar, the Sharks desperate for alternative income streams as they bid to keep their head above water.

So desperate, they are willing to damage their chances of climbing off the bottom of the NRL table by turning Sunday's home game against fellow strugglers North Queensland into a neutral contest at Adelaide's Hindmarsh Stadium, which will host its first NRL fixture in three years.

"From a coach's point of view you'd much prefer to play at home but we need to get money through the coffers of the club too," Stuart said.

"With the financial position the club's in, we don't make much money from home games.

"We've got to do everything we can for the club, they do everything they can for us, so we've got to do everything we can to help generate that money and going to Adelaide and promoting the game as well is a part of it."

The Sharks are making some efforts to build a fan-base in Adelaide via coaching clinics and player appearances in the lead-up to the match.

Stuart said he was grateful for the chance to get away from Sydney for a few days of bonding following four consecutive losses.

"We're in a difficult position at the moment, but the players are in a good frame of mind, the coaching staff have been really happy with the way we've been training and preparing the last two weeks, and getting away for three or four days could be a good thing," he said.

"Getting away from our normal routine and being together as a group in another city that we're not too common with, could be a good thing, so it'll be four days of work and hopefully get a result."
