Cats keen to maintain AFL momentum
Geelong are determined to maintain their red-hot AFL form ahead of the finals after disposing of two key challengers in the last fortnight.
Although the all-conquering Cats are two-and-a-half-games clear on top of the ladder after beating the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn, coach Mark Thompson said the club would not flirt with their form by resting players in the run to September.
Cats star Gary Ablett could resume from an ankle injury in Saturday night's clash against top-eight contenders Richmond at Telstra Dome.
"He did pull up well this morning and he'll run again tomorrow," Thompson said.
Geelong will definitely welcome back midfielder Cameron Ling, despite undergoing surgery on a broken cheekbone just three weeks ago.
"We could probably not take that risk but trying to tell Lingy that (is tough)," Thompson said.
"He's ready to go, he wants to play, he gets vicious and angry if he doesn't play."
Darren Milburn will also return after overcoming a virus, while David Wojcinski (Achilles) is rated a 50-50 chance to take on the Tigers.
"To be honest `Wojo' (Wojcinski) could probably still be playing right now - if it was finals, he would be playing," Thompson said.
After seeing off premiership challengers the Bulldogs and Hawks in two highly-anticipated encounters, Thompson was confident his side would not drop their guard against the improving Richmond.
He cited the club's staggering sequence of 35 wins in 37 matches.
"We've got a pretty good record over the last 37 matches, you probably think they're good enough to really get back and focus on the opposition after two pretty good weeks of footy," he said.
"All we do is put the framework in place, give them a look at the opposition, ask them to do certain things and ultimately it's up to them if they do it.
"If it doesn't look like it's happening that way on Saturday night, we'll jump in and try and alter their behaviour."
Thompson said he did not want to drop a game in the remaining five home and away matches and he was unconcerned about the possibility of the side having to win 16 games in a row to secure this year's premiership.
The Cats are currently on an eight-game winning streak after their only loss so far this season, the stunning round-nine thrashing from Collingwood.
"Every week we do the same thing," he said.
"Once we play, everyone has a role to play.
"The doctors get around to see if anyone's injured, the fitness guys work out how much load people have done and the coaches are already in that reviewing process looking at the next opposition - nothing really changes from week to week.
"We very rarely ask for a Monday talk about what happened the week before.
"I don't see why we can't keep doing what we're doing."
Thompson added injured forward Tom Hawkins was still in the mix despite missing the past two weeks with foot soreness.
Hawkins is expected to miss a further two matches before resuming in the VFL.
"He's really lean and looks fit, he's itching to play so it might be a good thing to get his mental energy back," he said.
"Earlier in the season, Tommy was looking a little tired and jaded with the pressure of playing AFL football."
