Roddick roars through to second round
A vengeful Andy Roddick underlined his credentials by hurtling into the second round of Wimbledon with a 6-1 7-6 6-2 demolition of Czech Jiri Vanek.
Vanek had beaten last year's runner-up in their only previous meeting, at Delray Beach in 2001.
But Roddick, the second seed, was in no mood for a repeat performance and fired 14 aces as he charged to victory in 82 minutes.
"I felt like it was a pretty good performance," said Roddick. "I got out of the gates and broke three times in the first set and twice in the third. Three sets, I'm through to round two."
Roddick will meet Italian lucky loser Daniele Bracciali in the next round.
"I feel like I have a good shot here on this surface," added the world number four, who was beaten by Roger Federer in final here 12 months ago. "I'm trying. I'm working hard. I'm putting in the effort."
French Open champion Rafael Nadal made a seamless transition to grasscourt tennis by pounding American Vince Spadea into submission with a 6-4 6-3 6-0 victory in the first round.
The 19-year-old Spaniard had little problem unleashing his muscular style of play on the lush lawns of Centre Court as he began his bid to become the first man in 25 years to win back-to-back French Open and All England Club crowns.
Spadea had won the pair's only previous meeting but a year on from that clash, the fourth seed proved to be in a different league, despite playing in only his fifth match on the slick surface.
Nadal, who capped an incredible claycourt season by triumphing in Paris earlier this month, turned on the power to bamboozle Spadea with a mix of fierce groundstrokes and nifty touches at the net.
