Qld Trio in battle to kick in Origin
Origin rookie Johnathan Thurston could be a shock choice as Queensland's goal kicker against NSW on Wednesday night.
Thurston does not even kick for his North Queensland NRL club.
But he's staking a bid to take the pressure shots for the Maroons in his debut at Suncorp Stadium in front of 50,000 screaming fans.
Queensland captain Darren Lockyer is a slight favourite to do the goal kicking with Thurston and hooker Cameron Smith also auditioning for the job during the past week.
Lockyer, who was struggling with the boot for Brisbane early in the season, admitted coach Michael Hagan had not settled on a kicker 48 hours out from the big game.
He wants the job and says it's a myth he doesn't like the added pressure goal kicking brings with his role already stacked with responsibilities.
"He (Hagan) will make the decision which is best for the team," said Lockyer.
"I'll be happy to go with that, whatever it is."
Both Lockyer and Smith have kicked for Queensland under Origin intensity which would seemingly give them an edge over Thurston, who has no club form.
But Thurston is highly regarded as a goal kicker in waiting.
