Rudan to captain Sydney FC team
Former Young Socceroos defender Mark Rudan was a surprise selection for the captaincy of the inaugural Sydney FC team.
The tall defender was given the nod at Star City Casino by coach Pierre Littbarski ahead of Socceroos Steve Corica, Clint Bolton and David Zdrillic.
"It is a great honour and a great privilege," said 29-year-old Rudan in front of a gathering including club investor and Hollywood star Anthony LaPaglia and swimmer Ian Thorpe.
"Considering it is the start of a new era in Australian football and Sydney FC is arguably one of the biggest clubs in the league and to lead this new team is a massive honour.
"There are a few players capable of being captain and certainly a couple with a lot higher profiles.
"There were a number of players who captained sides last year so to be chosen is a great honour."
Rudan was named captain before the side left for trial matches in Dubai last month and believed the added responsibility will not affect his play.
"I like to think I lead on the field, communicate and talk to the players," he said.
"Being at the back I can see what is happening in front and it is a good position to talk a lot.
"I have captained teams in the past and I think it lifts my game having that added responsibility."
