Wood, McEwen win cycle Classic
The status of their main rivals and the course remain a mystery for Robbie McEwen and Oenone Wood ahead of this week's Australian road cycling championships.
But there is nothing uncertain about their form.
McEwen and Wood were the standout riders of the Jayco Bay Classic criterium series, which finished on Sunday at Docklands.
Wood put an exclamation mark on her successful title defence by winning the last round.
Six-time series winner McEwen showed he was, in fact, mortal by finishing in the main group as Victorian Hilton Clarke won.
They could relax after securing their series titles on Saturday night at Geelong.
It was Wood's third win of the series and she was second in the other two races, while McEwen won two rounds.
"That's why I come here, so that I'm in good form for nationals and it gives you a chance to get your racing legs again," Wood said.
Wood, the world No.3, is aiming for a national triple crown when the Australian road titles are held in Echunga, near Adelaide from Wednesday.
She will defend her time trial and road race titles on Wednesday and Friday respectively after winning the national criterium championship in Friday night's round of the Bay series.
