All Blacks snatch victory
An injury time try to winger Doug Howlett handed the All Blacks a last-gasp 23-21 win in a gripping Tri-Nations rugby test at Jade Stadium.
After trailing from the opening minute of the match, Howlett crossed for New Zealand's only try in the right corner after waves of pressure finally cracked a Springbok defence that had been heroic throughout.
The visitors scored three tries to one and looked like pulling off an upset and ending their record losing streak against New Zealand, which now extends to eight Tests.
It was very nearly the first loss under the coaching reign of Graham Henry and captaincy of Tana Umaga, but the All Blacks showed determination to record their sixth straight win of the season and second of the Tri-Nations series.
It was the first defeat for Springboks coach Jake White, who had overseen four Test wins until now.
While the All Blacks forwards enjoyed an edge in the set pieces and gave their team a clear possession advantage, they didn't enjoy the dominance of a week earlier in their 16-7 defeat of Australia at Wellington.
New Zealand failed to get quality front-foot ball against a resolute Springboks pack and a flat defence. The All Blacks set up countless rucks but the ball delivery was too slow to allow the backline more space and chances.
The visitors were happy to soak up the attacks with a rushing defensive line, using speed and neat touches of skill to counter on occasions.
Six penalty goals - five to second five-eighth Daniel Carter - kept the All Blacks in touch.
The Springboks led 21-12 at the break courtesy of three converted tries to the All Blacks' four penalties.
