Mottram wins 3000m in style
Craig Mottram has ticked the final box in a perfect preparation for next weekend's world indoor championships.
A day before catching a plane to Valencia, Spain, the big Victorian cruised to victory in the 3,000m on day one of the Australian titles.
Mottram went past Kenyan Shadrack Kosgei with 450m to go and extended his lead throughout the final lap to win in seven minutes 48.26 seconds.
The world indoors will be Mottram's first big international meet since his ill-fated campaign at last year's world championships in Osaka, Japan, when he struggled to 13th in the 5,000m final while being hampered by a hamstring injury.
He has since undergone a gruelling summer training campaign, interspersed with a handful of impressive victories.
He broke his own national 3,000m indoor record in Boston in January and claimed a record sixth national 5,000m title last week in Melbourne.
"I can go into next week knowing that I'm fit and I'm ready," Mottram said after beating Kosgei by 40 metres, with training partner Collis Birmingham in third place.
"If it doesn't work then hey, I tried everything I could.
"I'm pretty confident that I can compete well and that it will be another good world championship for me.
"Osaka was a long time ago. It cut deep at the time, but the true measure of a man is how they bounce back.
"I went over to Boston in my first international race since Osaka and put my head down, ran hard, broke records and ran a PB.
"I know that's long gone and I'm ready for the next challenge which is next week in Valencia.
"... I'm going there to try and win a world championship and I've got a good chance.
"There will be some great competition, but that's distance running, that's why I do it."
Mottram will race the 3,000m in Valencia, a distance where he is a two-time World Cup champion.
