Aussie women swim to FINA wins
Brisbane teenager Kate Corkran has stolen the limelight on the eve of the 2003 skins event in Sydney with an impressive victory at the first FINA World Cup here.
The 20-year-old took the win in the 100 metres butterfly final in a time of 1:00.17, marginally ahead of fellow team mate and multiple Australian age champion, Danni Miatke.
American, Michelle Defreese rounded out the podium placings.
The Aussie pair were both back in the water again for the 50 metres freestyle final with Miatke swimming well to take bronze in a time of 25.72 behind victorious German Katrin Meiner (25.21) with Corkran finishing fifth.
West Australian breaststroker Sally Foster grabbed her debut World Cup medal taking silver in the 100 metre event. Foster clocked a time of 1:08.67, marginally behind World Championship finalist, Mirna Jukic of Austria (1:07.76) with China's, Xiao Yu Liu (1:10.36) taking bronze.
Distance freestyle specialist Meagan Walker joined the Australian girls medal haul when she finished third (8:47.76) in the 800 metres freestyle behind Chinese pairing Jing Zheng (8:40.79) and Yan Zhang (8:45.76).
