Coach plucked on Roosters' plight
Almost 30 years of first grade coaching experience is packed into Brian Smith's resume.
But even he appears stumped over the Sydney Roosters' remarkable NRL slide.
The Roosters coach said he would use next round's bye as a welcome chance to get to the bottom of their slump after Saturday's 24-13 loss on the Gold Coast - their fourth straight.
However, Smith admitted he was not sure where to start.
Asked if there one aspect his side could focus on to help reverse their fortunes, Smith said: "I'm not that good, mate - I couldn't tell you one thing.
"We've got a full round-up to do."
His plans may yet be thrown into further disarray after Test aspirant Nate Myles was placed on report for a first half lifting tackle on Titans backrower Greg Bird.
Not that Smith appeared worried.
"Sometimes those tackles are worse than they look originally," he said.
Smith already has enough to be concerned about.
Apart from their poor form, the Roosters are reeling from the indefinite suspensions of Todd Carney and Anthony Watts while Myles (Titans) and back-row partner Tom Symonds (Parramatta) have been linked to other clubs.
Their inglorious fall must have been put into perspective for Smith when his side ran out against the Titans on Saturday.
The last time the two sides met they were vying for an NRL grand final berth.
At Skilled Park on Saturday, both were hoping to turn their seasons around.
The Roosters (2-6 record) are still waiting, after the four tries to two loss to Gold Coast (3-5).
"We have had a horrible start," downcast Roosters captain Braith Anasta said of their season.
"In the form that we are in, confidence is down and that's a big thing in the game.
"A lot of guys are probably struggling at bit with their own games.
"We will try and find something extra in the next couple of weeks and bounce back after the bye.
"The good thing is that we get a break now, we get to freshen up and come back."
Anasta looked particularly crushed after seeing his side squander a 13-12 lead in the 67th minute when the Titans ran in two tries in the final seven minutes.
"We had too many lapses. We would look good at times but we went in and out of it," he said.
"At the end of the day with seven or eight minutes to go we were on top and in control but we let ourselves down again.
"We can't keep doing it. It is really hurting us."
However, Smith had not given up on the season just yet.
"It's pretty obvious we need to make some changes, buff ourselves up a bit," he said.
"We need to come back big and strong against the Sharks in a fortnight's time.
"If we get going we won't be far away."
