Ben Cousins receives good news
Ben Cousins' AFL farewell week is officially on after a better-than-expected medical report on the Richmond star's injured hamstring.
Cousins looked set to have his career finished by injury after his troublesome hamstring gave problems again in the Tigers' loss to St Kilda last weekend - the second last match of the home-and-away season.
The 32-year-old had announced he would quit AFL at the end of the season, and it looked as if the last fans would see of the 2005 Brownlow Medallist in action was limping around the field with ice on his leg.
But Richmond said on Monday night scans revealed no significant damage to Cousins' hamstring, paving the way for him to play against Port Adelaide at Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
"Ben will continue to work with the Richmond medical and fitness staff over the next few days, and we are hopeful he will be fit for this Sunday's match against Port Adelaide," Richmond football boss Craig Cameron said in a statement.
After Cousins' injury, Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said the star would be given the chance to make his own decision on whether he was fit to play against Port.
"We're pretty positive with the right rehab and recovery that he'll get up and play," Hardwick said.
"We want him to go out on the best possible note we can so we want him on the field and we want to win.
"Ben has been in this league for 15 years so he'll make the call whether he's right to play. If he's right to play, he'll play."
In what shapes as a huge week for Cousins, his revealing television documentary detailing his drug addiction and rehabilitation is set to air on the Seven Network on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
