Genia keen to continue Wallabies dream
Wallabies bolter Will Genia says he's ready and raring to go if Robbie Deans continues to propel him along a dream Test journey after starting his first match in 12 weeks.
With Australian starting halfback Luke Burgess's position under the microscope after struggling in the 22-16 Tri-Nations loss to New Zealand last weekend, Genia kept up the pressure with a slick 60-minute club display on Saturday.
The rookie Queenslander was a stand-out for Norths-QUT but could not prevent his team being overrun 38-15 by fellow competition battlers Sunshine Coast at Courtney Oval.
Like his impressive eight minutes off the bench against the All Blacks at Eden Park, Genia provided slick service to his backs and also sparked the Eagles best attacking raids.
"I feel pretty good, this is my first start in a while, since the Brumbies (on May 2)," said the 21-year-old, whose Super 14 was cut short by a finger operation.
"I was happy with my service but I was disappointed we lost.
"I got around the field real well and feel fit so it's good."
Former Wallabies skipper Andrew Slack has led the call for Genia, who started the year as the Reds back-up No.9, to replace Burgess due to his superior passing.
Although Genia played down his chances of starting against South Africa in Cape Town on August 8, the Papua New Guinea product confidently backed himself to step up to the mark.
"Luke Burgess has been the starting halfback for about 15 Tests now," he said.
"He's a good player and he'll bounce back from his performance in the last All Black Test.
"I think I'd be ready. I'd definitely take the opportunity and do as well as I could.
"I hope I get more time and get into a rhythm and get comfortable."
American World Cup flyhalf Mike Hercus kicked the Sunshine Coast home in their five-tries-to-two upset, landing four from four in the second half.
Meantime, Genia's Reds and Wallabies teammate Peter Hynes, 23rd man in Auckland, went through a specific skills training session in Brisbane as his GPS club side had a bye and plans to be loaned to a rival club were scrapped.
Hynes is challenging Drew Mitchell and Lachie Turner for a start on the Wallabies wing against the Springboks.
Turner played half a game in a Wallabies-studded Eastwood's 39-14 victory over Warringah in Sydney's Shute Shield on Saturday.
Burgess turned out for Sydney University, scoring a try in their 69-3 rout of Northern Suburbs.
Sixteen Wallabies squad-members turned out for their clubs in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. A 24-man squad will fly to South Africa on Friday.
