Mayer denies walking out on Eagles
Manly chief executive Grant Mayer has denied reports he has been sacked by the NRL premiers after losing the support of the football club's board.
The Seven Network claimed Mayer had been showed the door and would leave the northern beaches club at the end of next week, an allegation he later refuted.
"The story's a total surprise to me," Mayer said.
"I have not resigned and they can't sack me."
The report claimed Mayer wanted out immediately but was asked to stay on until the end of next week.
Political infighting at the Sea Eagles last month prompted Mayer to offer his resignation after it was made clear he would not be offered a new deal for next year.
It seemed a peace deal between Mayer and Sea Eagles co-owner Max Delmege had been reached, but Delmege said he would not stand in Mayer's way if he wanted out.
"I think if anybody isn't happy in a position, to try and hold them there is a backward step," Delmege told Seven.
